THIS IS THE WAY THE VALVERDE SYSTEM WORKS
Thank you for your interest in the Valverde System. The System is characterized by great flexibility and tailored to players of all levels and special needs. For instance, we understand that regardless of your commitment to achieving tennis excellence, you find yourself sometimes without enough time to be totally prepared mentally. The new and improved Valverde System is organized to cover all the different critical times when you need to be focusing on improving your mental toughness: during practices, three days before and during the tournaments. It is much easier to use because it will give you different alternatives depending on your personal needs. It is also color coordinated for easy identification.
Below please find a description of how the system works. We can send it via regular mail or overnight. You order the system by calling this number: 785-979-7490 and ask for Iva Valverde.
- Players acquire the Valverde System and immediately fill out a questionnaire. This is a diagnostic tool that allows me to analyze 12 aspects of their mental skills: desire, eating habits, perception of their own potential, dedication, determination, goal setting, courage, concentration, confidence, winning attitude, pride and perspective. I send them their results with information that allows them to improve their mental toughness. For instance: if a player has difficulties with confidence or concentration, it will show in the analysis of his/her profile. The results will explain what confidence or concentration is and the steps a player needs to take to improve it.
- Players immediately begin to listen to one of the 25 CD tracks in conjunction with the Light and Sound System. These tracks contain information about the building blocks to success in tennis and life. The Light and Sound System helps players to get into a deep state of mind called Theta. In this state of mind, the information is easily absorbed by our subconscious mind. This is very important because our subconscious mind controls up to 90% of our behavior and performance.
- Players need to listen to CD tracks, one at a time, for 21 consecutive days. The reason for this repetition is simple: it takes 21 days for our mind to create a habit. Six of the other 25 CD tracks teach the players a powerful mental tool that allows players to increase their concentration skills and to control mind processes and automatic physiological responses such as their heart beat and pulse rate.
- In the mean time, players follow the instructions found in the program and read the two books: From Flooding to Zoning and The Blue Print to Success, and they also do mental exercises found in them. These exercises are designed to increase the players' awareness of their mental processes and their influence on the performance. These exercises focus on confidence and concentration building blocks and on how to deal with psychological challenges on and off the tennis court, for instance, internal or external distractions, intimidation, nervousness, performance anxiety, stress, etc. Upon completion of the mental exercises, they need to email them to me for review and feedback (one at a time).
- During this process, players, coaches and parents can call or email me anytime to share information about progress, specific challenges that they may be facing, or any other issues that may be important for the players' mental toughness development. In addition, I attend about 18 junior tournaments per year where I do personal consultations with players, coaches and parents. These services are included in my one-time fee for those who are following the Valverde System.

I am generally quite skeptical
Dear Iva and Jorge Valverde,
I want to tell you how incredibly grateful I am for what you have done for Max. He came back from the weekend he spent with you saying it was the best thing he ever did in his life, and I believe that to be true...that weekend was a transformative, life-changing experience for him, both in tennis and otherwise as well.
I don't know if you could sense when you first met me that I am generally quite skeptical. However when we sat down together I had a really good feeling about you and even after our short meeting, I myself felt good and calm mentally just from spending time with you. Still, I never expected just how significant the time you spent with Max would end up becoming!
From the tennis perspective, prior to the weekend in Miami I always believed that Max had much more potential than he was showing on the court. He was doing well, but I saw how much better he could do if he didn't "get in his own way" with negativity.
While Max can still do even more mentally (and physically), and I know he is working on that, I was shocked by the immediacy of the mental impact of your system! I never imagined that his mind set could be changed so drastically in so short a period of time.
He is truly a different person on the court in a very visible way. Gone are the head shakes lamenting a missed shot. In their place is a much calmer, more confident person who is willing to move on and has the tools to allow himself to do so.
It literally brings tears to my eyes when I think about the mental burden you have helped him dispel, so he can now truly enjoy the game and life he loves so much. I think you should know that several times since then he has told me how much he loves his life, and I believe that whatever it was you instilled in him allowed this more positive attitude to come out.
Also impressive was the practical tennis advice he received from you...I did not realize he would be focusing on that, and the technical skills you helped him with definitely show more results than anything he has ever done before. The nutrition and exercise tips were excellent and effective as well.
Of course, his results have been incredibly better, although that is just one by-product of the valuable advice and training. Before he went to you, he was on the biggest losing streak he ever had, and barely won a match in months. He was losing to people "he should have beaten." Immediately after he went on your program, he is on the biggest winning streak he has ever had, winning against people "he should have lost to."
Since then he won the backdraw of a tough designated, a super series, and got to the fourth round of the BMW qualifier after beating a couple "professional" players. Plus he is playing excellently and winning against other people where he previously did not. I believe he would have won that fourth round of the qualifier as well, had a couple incidents not occurred, such as slamming into a concrete wall. And his on-court attitude is a huge part of this winning streak.
Anyway, Max has benefited greatly from what you have taught him, and not just in his tennis game. My entire family feels as I do, and most importantly...Max does. I am sorry about the length of this email, but I feel compelled to express my deep gratitude for helping my son so much. So few people care enough to make that kind of a difference. It is wonderful that you help so many people in so many ways with the special expertise you have to offer.
Best regards,
Lisa Kaye
Hi Dr. Valverde!
I am just letting you know how I've been doing so far. I won the whole 18's Masters tournament for Middle States! I think listening to all of your tapes really helped me. Being a little more mentally tough really helped me stay focused and win. I did not let things bother me like they used to in those matches where you know everyone and their game and they know yours. In the finals, I played a girl who is top 50 in 16's, and I beat her fairly easily. We have had a long history together and she is known for her antics. In one instance, she lost a long point from an overhead and threw her racquet. She acted as if it was an accident and knelt down like she fell. This of course was fake. There was a referee on court and he asked her if she was okay. I was about to say something to the referee about her throwing her racquet because he "warned" me for raising my voice ( I was pumping myself up...nothing negative!). But, I laughed it off and let it go because I was fully focused and I knew that was the last thing I needed to get into my head. Normally, I would have said something and complained about how ridiculous it is for a referee to ask her if she is okay after she throws her racquet on purpose and then makes it like it was just an accident. I am really proud of how I played and how I acted on the court. I feel like it was a big stepping stone for me. -- Lauren Greco
Hi Jorge,
Last weekend I played a Midwest closed. I won the tournament and I was very happy with my level of play. I used the eight golden sequences on every point and that helped me to stay focused and calm on the court. I played aggressively throughout the tournament which is something I don't do that often but it helped me to perform my best during the tournament. My nerves were starting to kick in the later rounds but I took several deep breathes in colors to help myself relaxed, I also read my mental scripts during the changeovers which I thought helped me as well. I followed the schedule for the tapes (3 days before,1 hour before, 20 minutes before) and I think that got me into a relaxed state of mind. In the finals I played my best friend and doubles partner and I think I played the best against him because I was not afraid of losing.
Eric
Iva and Jorge,
Lauren is doing well. She is playing the Midwest Closed 12 this weekend and beat the # 9 seed first round. She is the only 10 yr. old to the round of 16. She has to play the # 2 seed next round but this is her breakthrough tournament since coming back from Nationals. She has played the # 3, #6 and now the # 9 seed first round her last 3 tournaments. She beat the girl today, # 25 in the Midwest 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. She beat the # 4 10 yr. old in the Midwest next round 6-3, 6-0. Ernie has really helped and I feel the Valverde System is really giving her inner strength and confidence. Everyone has noticed her now and realize she is the next force in the Midwest. They keep commenting on her transformation.
Lauren is looking forward to seeing you in April. She is doing her CD's every night and now we are going to start her reading.
Thanks again.

Dr. Valverde,
Just wanted to give you a quick update on Daniel. He's doing great and growing up in so many ways. He's been recruited by many colleges for tennis, narrowed it down to 7 that were recruiting him, applied and was accepted at all as well as 3 "always loved" schools that weren't recruiting him. Now, is down to those 3 and one for sure tennis school.....Duke, Miami (FL) and ND - accepted into and exploring walk-on possibilities but considering them regardless as such excellent schools, and Villanova - accepted into and on team etc. if goes there. He's a National Merit Finalist, will be his class' Valedictorian and has played well in tennis, esp. surpassingly in doubles where he's nearly in top 200 nationally and has won some lower level national tournaments. He's at a good point in all aspects of his life, and whatever path he chooses, he's learned so much from your program and tennis....it'll always be with him for life. Yet, he's also extremely well rounded. Just thought you'd enjoy hearing this. Take care and I'm sure we'll be in touch as I have my 12 year old. He's learned so much from watching his older brother that in some ways, he's already really mentally tough, probably just from being the youngest of 3 boys!! Enjoy your spring.
Best Wishes, -- Nancy Schafer
Dr. Valverde,
I know Brittany wrote you last week and told you she had won her first tournament ever. That was a local tournament with a very strong draw here in SE Michigan (Detroit-Ann Arbor area). Of course, we were all very pleased.
This past weekend I took her down to Cincinnati for a weighted Midwest tournament, the Tommy Fontova. It had a considerably larger draw, more points at stake, etc. Well, she had 6 matches in 48 hours, and won all of them, winning that tournament. She beat 4 seeded players to accomplish it. (Of course, she has realized that seeding doesn't mean a whole lot.) That is 10 straight matches won, also a first for her.
So with the 2 weekends, her Midwest ranking in 16s (she must age up to 16s in June) will have jumped by almost 200 spots, once they get this recorded. This weekend she will play in Wisconsin at a Level 5 national, the first national level tourn. since starting your program. (She didn't get into the Level 2 Feb. Nationals, but I predict she will get into the May ones.) She is more confident than I've ever seen her. I could not have believed that 6 weeks on your program could have had so much impact. Thank you for how you've helped her. Meeting you has helped her maximize her potential immensely.
- Carol Parks.
Jorge!
I love my personal CD so much. It is the coolest thing ever and you
personalized it even more with @ustin on the cover. Thank you so much for
taking the time to make me my personal CD. Also, thank you so much for adding
more tracks to it. It really is the coolest thing ever. I have been listening
to it a lot. Jorge thank you so much.
- Austin.

Tennis is a microcosmos of life. Have the will to be prepared…mentally!
*THE LIGHT AND SOUND SYSTEMS AND MIND SYNCHRONIZATION
Each half of the brain maintains an independent mental system. Consequently, it is not at all unusual for each to have its own likes and dislikes, and more importantly, different attitudes. In addition, they can act independently of each another. Each may purposefully initiate behavior, guide response choices, and recall and act on certain desires, impulses, or situations without the aid, knowledge, or active self-conscious participation of the other half of the brain. Furthermore, in response to a challenge, the right and the left hemispheres may act in opposition, one half responding emotionally and attempting to do one thing, the other half responding rationally and attempting to accomplish something entirely different.
There is nothing which will destroy your confidence and ability faster or more completely than your imagination (right hemisphere function) and your reasoning (left hemisphere function) conflicting with one other. Conversely, when imagination and reasoning are harmoniously pulling in the same direction, an irresistible force results. The force is so great because one is not merely added to the other but is multiplied by the other. This kind of mental functioning is called mind synchronization--one of the keys to the achievement of peak performance. However, throughout history, humans have found that it is not easy to bring both hemispheres to work simultaneously. Much of our lives we spend swinging back and forth between left and right-dominant states. Research shows that the LS systems can alter hemispheric asymmetry and imbalance quickly and produce more symmetrical, balanced brain-wave patterns. In addition, evidence suggests that by doing so, LS systems can assist in producing the peak performance states associated with whole-brain integration.
The Valverde Excellence Center
Dr. Jorge Valverde
The Valverde Excellence Center (VEC) operates at the Keys Gate tennis and Golf facility located in Homestead, Florida. It is only twenty minutes from the Florida Keys and forty minutes from the Miami International Airport.
My wife Iva and I are combining our expertise, talents and passion for the game to create the unique synergy that brings out excellence in those who participate. At VEC we are working with players and their parents and coaches on all the aspects of the game to help them be totally prepared. We are working with juniors and pros for different periods of time, depending on their needs. We are working with a very small number of players or on individual basis, paying attention to all the details of the game. Arrangements for visits need to be made as early as possible.
In the past I mostly focused on the mental part, leaving aside my knowledge of the other aspects of the game obtained by working as an assistant coach of the University of Kansas tennis teams and with several world class coaches. At The Valverde Excellence Center, I will use all my knowledge of the game in cooperation with Iva. Below please find some information about her background.
Iva Valverde's Tennis Background Information
Iva is from the Czech Republic, trained there from the age of four by Jaromir Bradler, a national team coach. She was a member of her national team, she was ranked top five as a junior in her country and top 150 in singles in ITF and top 50 in ITF doubles. She also played pro tournaments before injuring her shoulder. After that she decided to join the tennis team of the University of South Alabama (Top 15 NCAA Div. I program at the time), where she won the NCAA Division I National Championships in doubles and received All American honors two years in a row. At this university, she was coached by Joey Scrivano, currently a women's head coach at Baylor University, who also coached NCAA Div. I Singles Champion, Zuzana Zemanova. In 2005, Iva was selected The Citizen of her home city due to her outstanding career as a tennis player. After finishing her career as a player, she was coaching juniors for 3 years in New York and Florida. Iva has been studying the Valverde System and participating with me in the evaluation and counseling of my clients for the past 4 years. Her tennis expertise, based on her career as a player and as a coach, has significantly contributed to the service I am providing to my clients.
We will be coordinating our efforts with the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain, where we will go with our students at least once a year.
Holistic Approach
We are focusing on the interaction between all the aspects of a player's game. When working with a player, it is crucial to address all four aspects of the game as an integrated whole because they are intertwined and interdependent. All the parts of the game (physical, technical, strategic, and mental) are a cause and an effect at the same time and they all work together as a system. For example, a player is nervous before a match (mental), he/she tenses up and as a result, he/she cannot execute her strokes (technical). In another situation, a lack of strategy may be caused by lack of some shots in a player's repertoire (technical), and this lack of strategy results in high levels of anxiety (mental). This is the reason why the most effective way to develop a player is to follow a holistic approach. This is why we are taking this approach at the VEC.
Specific Goals
- Maximizing the effectiveness of each practice. Players need to develop the discipline to set up their mind in the direction that allows them to achieve optimal performance at all times, thus maximizing the effectiveness of each practice. We will teach a routine that helps to achieve these goals.
- Positive attitude during the entire practice. We are teaching specific behaviors and attitudes that will allow a player to deal with adversity and to celebrate the little victories. This attitude will be reflected in his/her body language and thought patterns and his/her ability to focus on the here and now.
- Developing independence and responsible attitude. Tennis players who want to achieve the highest levels, need to mature at an early age and this implies the ability to make decisions effectively regardless of the challenges they face. This is possible by creating an independent and responsible attitude. We will help players to accomplish these important goals by raising their awareness levels and providing them with tools that they can use daily.
- Improving concentration. Focusing on the right things improves confidence and reduces pressure. We will help players become aware of their internal and external interference (noise) to optimize their concentration and provide them with the tools to achieve total focus.
- Building confidence. Believing in oneself is the most important characteristic of those who achieve greatness. We will help players to achieve this by teaching them about the factors that contribute to the creation of confidence and the step-by-step process to gain and maintain it.
- Evaluation of key factors in the player's development. Feedback and constant recognition of the different aspects of the game that players need to improve on are the keys to the effective development of a player. We will evaluate each player in order to figure out the possible causes of the player's current challenges and how these challenges affect one another. They include:
- Footwork
- Key strokes and specialty shots
- Knowledge and execution of different strategies
- Fitness, flexibility and quickness
- Life style (nutrition, sleeping habits, organizational skills, etc.)
- Confidence, concentration, emotional control
- Recommending and implementing improvements. After identifying the areas that need improvement, we will suggest the needed adjustments and the reasoning behind them. Then, we will work on implementing these changes and incorporating them into the player's game.
A typical day at the VEC will include the following:
- Six hours of on-court and off-court work. We will arrange the schedule according to each player's needs. Some players will need more time on the court than others and vice versa. However, in either case, we will provide an environment that will facilitate learning through the use of several teaching tools such as:
On-Court Work
- Video Analysis
- Match play simulations
- Challenging drills
- Concentration exercises
- Self-awareness exercises
- Pattern recognition drills
- Accuracy of ball perception
- Active visualization
|
Off-Court Work
- Discussions in regard to the following:
- Development strategies
- Celebration of Discipline
- Inner Confidence
- Commitment to Excellence
- Script writing for the production
of a personalized CD. This is offered
only to players who visit us for minimum
of three days.
|
In order to accomplish the above goals, we are committed to work only with individual players. We make an exception and work with more than one player when there are more than one child in the family. Iva and I will always work closely together using our different strengths to help each player in the best way possible.
We are looking forward to helping you achieve your tennis goals.

Won Her First Southern
Hey Iva and Jorge,
I wanted to let you know that Courtney won her first Southern 14's tournament. She beat a little girl 6-1 6-1 in the finals that she has lost to three previous times. She was very proud! We have looked at the dates you sent us and would love for her to come December 12th . Is that date still available? She will be in Miami for the Orange Bowl Qualifier the !4th so we were hoping she could spend some time with you prior to that. We know that you suggest 2 and a half days but she was so exhausted when we returned home after her first visit We are afraid for her to go straight into a tournament after a longer visit. Using the "lower engine" must be exhausting! She still would like to come at a later date for a longer visit.
Thank you
Robin
He Really Enjoyed It
Dr. Valverde
Just wanted to say thank you for working with Morgan, he really enjoyed it The Backhand at times looked great, thanks to your wife, he worked extremely hard on the meditation and the routine between points. (He lost in the Semis).
Can't wait to see you guys in March.
Wayne
Thanks again
All four of us Have Been Renewed
Jorge & Iva,
Sandy & I are grateful for your enthusiastic input and guidance this past week. You have helped us look at the lessons of life through the lens of positive thinking. Your words of wisdom served not only to encourage our girls, but also to highlight the potential of their physical ability and underscore the value of encouraging them to dream and believe in themselves. As parents we are glad to be reminded of the importance of giving them the space to set their own goals while striving to keep their practice sessions and match play focused but above all else fun! All four of us have been renewed and regenerated by the time spent with you in Florida - truly a great way to start off the 2007 season.
Chris and Sandy
Better Footwork In Two Days Than In Two Years
The trip back was a bit long. However, I think if was very important for the girls as well as me. They will be working on what they learned daily. Even though I don't play tennis, I'm going to start taking a more active role. I've relied on the coaches to solve the footwork problem and forehand stroke, with poor results. They learned 100% better footwork in two days than in two years.
I will keep in touch and let you know how the progress is coming. See you at the Eddie Herr. Ashley is in the qualifier.
Thanks,
Charlotte
