Each half of the brain maintains an independent mental system. Consequently, it is not at all unusual for each to have its own likes and dislikes, and more importantly, different attitudes. In addition, they can act independently of each another. Each may purposefully initiate behavior, guide response choices, and recall and act on certain desires, impulses, or situations without the aid, knowledge, or active self-conscious participation of the other half of the brain. Furthermore, in response to a challenge, the right and the left hemispheres may act in opposition, one half responding emotionally and attempting to do one thing, the other half responding rationally and attempting to accomplish something entirely different.

There is nothing which will destroy your confidence and ability faster or more completely than your imagination (right hemisphere function) and your reasoning (left hemisphere function) conflicting with one other. Conversely, when imagination and reasoning are harmoniously pulling in the same direction, an irresistible force results. The force is so great because one is not merely added to the other but is multiplied by the other. This kind of mental functioning is called mind synchronization--one of the keys to the achievement of peak performance. However, throughout history, humans have found that it is not easy to bring both hemispheres to work simultaneously. Much of our lives we spend swinging back and forth between left and right-dominant states. Research shows that the LS systems can alter hemispheric asymmetry and imbalance quickly and produce more symmetrical, balanced brain-wave patterns. In addition, evidence suggests that by doing so, LS systems can assist in producing the peak performance states associated with whole-brain integration.
